●ググ・ヂャミニさん、25歳。南アフリカの貧困のなかで、14歳のときに性暴力によりHIVに感染した彼女は、いま、地域のHIV陽性者グループのリーダーとして、エイズ・結核など感染症との闘いの最前線にたっています。
●エイズ・結核などの感染症による「世界の危機」が叫ばれてから数年。感染症を取り巻く現実は深刻さを増しています。HIVとともに生きる人々は世界全体で4000万人。アフリカだけでなく、全世界で感染が拡大しています。
●アフリカで、アジアで、旧ソ連圏で……人々は感染症との闘いに立ち上がっています。予防、ケア、治療、アドボカシー……しかし、足りないものがあります。最低限の医療保健施設、医療従事者、治療薬へのアクセス。そして、感染症と闘う国際社会の断固たる意志です。
●感染症との闘いに、日本は、私たちは何ができるのでしょうか。７月のＧ８サミット、９月の国連ミレニアム＋５サミットに向けて、市民社会としてメッセージを発していきたいと思います。

１ レイプ感染の母子再起
------------------------------------
「エイズであることを隠さないで」「頑張って前向きに生きましょう」。３畳ほどの部屋からググ・ドラミニさん（２３）の朗らかな声が聞こえる。相談に訪れたＨＩＶ（エイズウイルス）感染者の心がなごんでいく……。
ググさんは小学３年生の長女ルンギレちゃん（８）とヨハネスブルク郊外で月額４０００円の部屋を借り、一つのベッドで身を寄せ合って暮らす。枕もとの作りかけの赤いビーズ細工はエイズ撲滅のＰＲバッジだ。
エイズ相談のほか、自身の悲惨な体験と克服の過程を語る講演の謝礼を生活費にしている。
ググさんは１４歳の時、ヨハネスブルク郊外で３人組の男にレイプされ、銃弾を２発浴びた。１発は頭部にめり込み、１発は耳たぶをかすめた。
ひん死の重傷を負い、ＨＩＶに感染した。「１年以内に死ぬ可能性がある」と言われ、レイプによる妊娠で生まれたルンギレちゃんも「ＨＩＶ陽性」と宣告された。
父親は８７年に強盗に射殺され、唯一の身内だった母親も心労が重なり、事件の２年後に心臓発作で亡くなった。
絶望と恐怖に震える日々が続いた。それでも、再び立ち上がる力が残っていた。「神様に私は生かされている。同じ境遇の人々を助けることが私に与えられた役目」。そう決意した彼女は感染者のカウンセリングを始めた。
悲しい出来事にも接する。頻繁に相談に乗ってあげた女性感染者が最近訪ねてきた。「ググ、今までありがとう」。そう言い残して、バスで１０時間かかる故郷に向かった。その翌週、彼女の訃報（ふほう）が届いた。「生まれた土地で死にたかったのね」。涙が止まらなかった。
「エイズは一人で抱え込んではダメ」。発病の恐怖を振り払うように話すググさん。正式名「ググレツ」は黒人系言語で「誇り」を意味する。
「おかあさん、私はお医者さんになってエイズに苦しむ人を助けたいの」。ルンギレちゃんの目が輝いた。彼女の名は「喜び」という意味だ。
部屋の壁に花柄の便せんが張られている。ググさんが自分を励ますために書いた「ありのままの自分を愛して」という詩の一節が見えた。（了）
